Tokyo to the Tees
Middlesbrough and Japan 1877-1939

30 May - 31 December 2017

A new exhibition commemorating the 140th anniversary of Christopher Dresser's visit to Japan and the, now forgotten links between Teesside and Japan.

Christopher Dresser was the first European designer to visit Japan after the reopening of trade links between the two countries, and this had a strong influence on his work for Linthorpe Art Pottery.

This exhibition explores in more detail the influence Japan played, as well as other local connections including shipping, commerce and culture.
Did you know that Middlesbrough had a thriving Japanese community in the 1920s? Find out about this and lots more in Tokyo to the Tees. Join us to celebrate the opening of the exhibition Sat 3 June.
